thoughts of the sigma 150-600mm

My thoughts after one week of use.

At the begin of this week i got my sigma 150-600mm contemporary lens in the mail. It is the nikon mount, and i have been using it with the nikon D7200. The reason i bought this lens is for bird photography. I have been birding for a year, mainly in swampy area`s.

Specs:

  • Focal length: 150-600mm
  • Angle of view: 16.4 to 4.1degrees
  • Aperture (min): 5-6.3
  • Aperture (max): 22-29
  • Filter Size: 95mm
  • Diaphragm: 9 bladed
  • lens construction: 20 elements in 14 groups
  • Dimensions: 105*260.1mm
  • Weight: 1.93 kg
  • Max magnification: 1:5
  • Close focusing: 2.8m

How did it perform so far

One thing to know is that i never used one of the big prime telephoto lens, so i wont be comparing this lens to one of those. Also to be honest this lens is not comparable to a 500f4 or a 600f4, they are 10x the price.  I bought mine for about 800 dollars.
So I will be comparing it from being used to a 55-300mm lens. There is a big difference between these lenses, like focal length range and the fact that th e55-300mm is a crop sensor lens.

Auto focus

The autofocus is fast enough to focus on birds in flight, still you need patience to focus. The main difference is that the sigma 150-600mm focuses from minimum focus to infinity focus is way way faster than the 55-300mm.

Sharpness

This one is a short answer, it is sharper that a 300mm lens at 300mm and at 600mm it is sharper.

Things that could be better

  • The tripod mount on the lens is a bit short for using it as a handle.
  • The manual focus ring a a bit small and the trough is a bit short.
  • The lens extended a lot when zooming to 600mm. (maby on a new sport version its an internal zoom)
